Wisedry Security Camera Desiccant is designed to help combat this by absorbing excess moisture within the camera housing, with color-indicating beads to let you know when a packet is full.
This guide will walk you through safely using the desiccant to protect your valuable equipment.
Important Note: These desiccant beads are NOT silica gel and CANNOT be recharged or reactivated by heating. Once the color indicator shows saturation, the desiccant should be discarded and replaced with a new one.
How to Use
Step 1: Preparation is Key
- Gather Your Tools: You will likely need a small screwdriver set (precision screwdrivers may be necessary depending on your camera’s design), possibly a plastic prying tool, and a clean, dry workspace.
- Consult Your Camera Manual: Before attempting to open your camera, consult its user manual. Look for any specific instructions or warnings regarding internal access. Be aware that opening your camera may void your warranty.
- Work in a Dry Environment: Choose a low-humidity environment to perform the installation to avoid introducing more moisture during the process.
- Handle with Care: Electronic components are delicate. Work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging any parts. Avoid touching lenses or sensors directly.
Step 2: Safely Accessing the Camera Interior
- Locate Fasteners: Examine your camera for screws or clips that hold the housing together. These are often located on the back, bottom, or sides of the camera.
- Carefully Open the Housing: Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove screws. If there are clips, gently use a plastic prying tool to disengage them. Do not force the housing open, as this can cause breakage.
- Identify Potential Desiccant Placement Areas: Once the camera is open, look for small, open spaces within the housing where the desiccant can be placed without obstructing any moving parts, ventilation holes, lenses, sensors, or heat sinks. Ideal locations are often in corners or areas that appear to have some space.
- Avoid Critical Components: DO NOT place the desiccant directly on circuit boards, connectors, or sensitive optical components.
Step 3: Installing the Desiccant
- Place the Desiccant: Carefully place the small desiccant packet in the chosen location within the camera housing. Ensure it lies flat and does not press against any components.
- Note the Initial Color: Observe the initial color of the indicating beads for future reference. They should be in their “dry” state color.
Step 4: Reassembling the Camera
- Carefully Close the Housing: Align the housing components and gently close them.
- Secure Fasteners: Replace screws or re-engage clips to secure the housing. Do not overtighten screws.
Step 5: Monitoring and Replacement
- Regularly Check the Indicator: Periodically inspect the camera’s visibility or open it up for inspection to check the color of the indicating beads. When the colored beads have turned from yellow to green, a packet is saturated and needs to be replaced.
- Replace with a New Desiccant: Carefully open the camera again, remove the old, saturated desiccant packet, and replace it with a new one by following steps 1-4.
- Properly Dispose of Used Desiccant: Dispose of the used desiccant according to local regulations.
